The Ivy League first referred to an athletic conference of eight different colleges and universities in Northeastern United States. Although it started on sports, it has been used to refer to the eight schools collectively. It has been a trademark to refer to academic excellence and elitism. The Ivy League Colleges List would include:

1. Brown University – located in Providence, Rhode Island, they are more famous for the athletic name “bears” and is one of the oldest colleges in the US.

2. Columbia University – located in New York City, New York, they bear the name “Lions” for athletic purposes. It is the oldest institution for higher education in New York.

3. Cornell University – located in Ithaca, New York, they are known to be the “Big Red” and was once called “the first American University.”

4. Dartmouth College – located in Hanover, New Hampshire, and is famous for being the “Big Green”, this college first started as a small school for native Americans.

5. Harvard University – situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts, they are known for their athletic name “Crimson” and is the oldest institution of higher learning in the US.

6. Princeton University – to be found in Princeton, New Jersey, and is known for being the “Tigers” was called College of New Jersey before.

7. University of Pennsylvania – located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, they bear the name “Quakers” for athletic purposes and being part of the Ivy League Colleges List, it was where the first woman president of Ivy League came from.

8. Yale University – Situated in New Haven, Connecticut, they are more known for the being the “Bulldogs” and provides a small city environment.

They say that to study in a university known to be part of Ivy League Colleges List is a privilege. This is due to the fact that the colleges and universities of the “ancient eight” all have high standards and provide quality learning. They have improved as they adapt to the changes in technology and economy. These schools offer distance learning programs as well which are as competitive as their regular in-class programs.
