Spiritual growth is not the same thing as being religious. It is a process that takes your entire life to build. For the serious seeker, the process will eventually fall into place naturally. Spiritual growth is not just for the monk who parks himself on a mountain somewhere. It is for anyone who seeks a happier life, with freedom from strain, fear and anxiety. Ridding yourself of wrong thoughts and beliefs develops into an awareness of who you are and your purpose in the world.
On a very basic level, continued spiritual growth helps you attain better health and a more balanced mood. A better attitude can only make life better for you and everyone around you. It is a very individual process. The inscription over the oracle at Delphi said, “Know Thyself.” That is as true today as it was when it was written thousands of years ago. The road to the discovery of your inner spirit is interesting and can be a great motivator in continuing on this path. For the inner self, spiritual growth is like food is to the physical body. Connecting with your physical body through this growth process will promote a healthier outlook on life.
Learning simple spiritual practices will develop the discipline to do them until they become habits. One of the best ways to start on this process is through daily meditation. This is not a spooky or “out there” activity. It can be just sitting quietly and listening to your breathing. Light a candle for focus if you like. When you get quiet in your mind, you can better hear your inner voice. That inner voice will know exactly what you need at a given time.
Our spirits are constantly growing and changing. We learn lessons as we eat, walk, sleep and breathe. The end result is not as important as the learning experience. One aspect of spirituality is learning to question yourself. It is not a way to escape responsibility or start behaving impractically. Spiritual growth is your birthright and is too important to be left to chance. Spiritual growth comes from the commitments you make, to yourself and others. It is vital to success in every aspect of your life.
