“Advice is cheap Ms. Molloy. It’s the things that come gift wrapped that count!”- Walter Matheau in “Hello, Dolly”

Advice is cheap. And if you need a little help creating a speech that sizzles, you can find a ton of free advice online in articles, blogs, websites and free newsletters. There are speech writing websites, free speaking tips and techniques, plus a ton of free articles with good information on how to jazz up your presentation.

But as you are combing through all this great advice, remember this: do what works for you. Sure, it’s great to get advice from experts, but what works for them might not be the best choice for you. So, if you read that a good way to engage your audience is to do a demonstration, or ask for a volunteer from your audience, or to start with a funny story, or surprise your audience by doing something unexpected, all of that is sound advice. But will it work for you?

One way to discover what works for you is to let go of all the rules and suggestions and instruction, and ask yourself, “How can I present this information in a way that is outrageously fun for me?” If you create a presentation that is fun for you to give, you can bet your bottom dollar that will be fun and enthralling to your audience.

Plus, when you tune into your sense of fun you tap into your own, unique creative juices, your authentic voice and your natural confidence. Think about it. When you are having fun, are you nervous or scared? Are you self-conscious? Nah, you are just enjoying what is happening, and that is a great way to feel when giving your speech.

My client Sheila was so nervous about an upcoming presentation she had to give at an industry conference. This was an incredible opportunity for her to establish herself as an expert in her field, and she was really scared of blowing it. But once she asked herself, “How can I present this material in a way that would be outrageously fun for me?” she came up with a great idea that involved a ventriloquist dummy and some outlandish costumes. From there, she was on her way to creating a presentation that she couldn’t wait to give. And, yes, it was a huge hit at the conference.

Now, if you read all the free advice online about creating a snazzy presentation, you probably find anything that says “Use a ventriloquist dummy and crazy costumes.” That idea came up and out of Sheila as she put aside all the rules and started thinking about how she could have some fun. And because it was her own original idea that bubbled up from somewhere inside of her, she was able to pull it off effortlessly and successfully while having a great time.

So, yes, it’s great to read all that good expert advice about how to jazz up your speech, but you may have an even better idea inside of you, just waiting for the chance to express itself. Take some time to put all that advice aside and be with the question, “What would be outrageously fun for me?” Both you and your audience could be delighted by what you discover.
