The title of this article is a typical question that one is likely to be asked when attending an interview for a sales management position. It is therefore important for these people to have a good comprehension of the role and what is required to become a success. It is also important from a personal point of view – anyone who is, or is about to start, as a sales manager will be eager to make a good impression and to increase profitability for the company.

So what are the essentials of becoming a top class sales manager? Well to start with it has to be the need for excellent communication skills. Any form of sales role requires the person to have a certain amount of self-confidence and an ability to explain all of the benefits of their product in a coherent and upbeat manner. For a person who is in a management role this communication will also extend to the sales team as it is vital that each member is aware of their role within the organisation.

Motivational skills is the second "must have" characteristic to become a good manager. There will be times when sales just hit the wall and the sales team start to become a bit down and depressed, even anxious. There may be disharmony between different members of the team and this is where a good motivator can really help to steer the team in the right direction.

To be classed as a top rank manager you need to be fair. This means treating all of the staff the same – not having a favourite etc. You also need to be loyal to each member of the team and to be willing to lead from the front. A lazy team leader will achieve nothing. You should be willing to muck in with the rest of the team etc.
