What if I told you that the secret to what you’re missing can be found in the same mundane experiences and details of your life that you think are boring you?
Of course you are. We all yearn for excitement and the thrill of new discoveries and experiences. We save for holidays that we never take, or we finally go and then chase away vague dissatisfaction when we get home because the experience didn’t quite measure up to the dream we had of it. For most of us, few if any of our life experiences actually satisfy our craving for fulfillment. We’re not even sure what we’re trying to satisfy inside. It’s elusive but persistent. It’s a vague craving we can’t understand or find the fulfillment for.
What if I told you that you don’t have to go anywhere or do anything that costs money or requires resources you don’t have in order to satisfy that hollow empty feeling? What if I told you that the secret to what you’re missing can be found in the same mundane experiences and details of your life that you think are boring you? You’d think I was mad. I can hear your protests about stresses and pressures and chores you don’t like and cruel bosses and indifferent spouses. And yet, it’s true. The world and the experiences that it offers are not holding out on you. The experiences that you’ve chosen are not the wrong ones. The universe has come to the party. You are the missing guest of honor!
Your body is present and your head is working the facts. You are keeping your head above water (barely) and watching the party on the golden shore, wondering why everyone seems to be having fun but you. But the most important aspect of YOU hasn’t been issued an invitation to participate. And you’re the one handing out invitations. Your Awareness of yourself in the present moment is missing.
Part of you lives in the future - planning, plotting and working toward that golden shore of tomorrow or next year or retirement. That adult aspect of yourself is ‘responsibly’ worrying about a point in time it can’t even be sure will ever happen. It’s too busy defending and working to avoid unpleasant potentials to notice whether there’s really any danger.
Another part of you lives in the past. It’s the part of you that never grew up so much that life has become ‘old hat’. It’s the child you are inside that still loves fireworks, flowers and fairy tales. It’s the part of you that has never stopped being in awe of yourself and the universe. But it’s also that part of you that got your knees and elbow scraped on life, fell down and failed and tried again and learned that sometimes you can’t get things ‘right’. It’s been decreed that vulnerable part of yourself has been ‘hurt enough’, ‘isn’t mature enough’, ‘doesn’t understand reality’, ‘trusts too much’ and so it’s kept ‘safely’ tucked away from the big, bad present moment.
But how much of your awareness is actually focused on now? Most of us are absent and unaccounted for in the present moment. Our bodies go through the motions and our head does the human brain computer calculations to get us from point A to point B. Our awareness dances around in our past and future, coloring the present moment with fears from the past and hopes for the future to the point we can’t really see what’s happening clearly. Some party. No wonder we’re bored and restless and itching to find a new scene!
What would happen if you issued an invitation to the child inside to come and experience the present moment as it without his or her fear from the past? What wonders would you find your experiences contain? How bright would the colors of your world become? How magical would the synchronicities and simple coincidences feel? How satisfying would things taste and touch and sound and feel in your world? How deeply fulfilling would it be to truly feel the humor and pain, love and hate and joy of the moment as the child you are experiences them?
What would happen if you also issued an invitation to the adult inside who is busy with the future to come and hold that child’s hand in the moment; to guide and protect that child and share its experiences now? What would happen to your future if you stopped worrying about it and began allowing it to unfold according to the choices and decisions you made in the present moment? What if the adult stuck in the future and the child stuck in the past partnered in a dance that they wrote themselves from the music they found around them now? That would definitely liven up the party!
Spiritual awareness isn’t about enlightenment gained through difficult disciplines and practices. It isn’t something that ‘will happen someday’ when we advance enough. Spiritual awareness is about Being All Here Right Now. What we have to experience is found in the present moment. What we have to learn is right under our nose. We aren’t spiritually aware and we don’t ‘get happy’ after we are healed. We can be spiritually aware and happy right now. We can experience the fulfillment of spiritual awareness and enjoyment of who we are while we grow and develop as humans and souls.
Issue some invitations. Invite yourself to the party. ‘See the world and travel’ your own journey one moment at a time. You are your own gift. Unwrap all of yourself this holiday season!
