Firstly, the dictionary meaning of the word ‘Maritime’ is as follows:
-connected with the sea or seafaring
-living or found near the sea

To interpret this dictionary terminology and give international coverage to Maritime, the term today encompasses amongst others, a wider field:
-connected with the sea or seafaring, in relation to navigation, shipping, etc.
-of or pertaining to the sea: maritime resources, maritime law, maritime insurance.
-of bordering on the sea: Maritime Provinces, maritime farmers, maritime cultures.
-of living near or in the sea: maritime plants.
-characteristic of a sailor; nautical: maritime clothing.

We are aware that nearly 70 percent of earth’s surface is covered with water whilst the balance 30 percent is land. No wonder, a maritime concept evolved even in the ancient world as the human spirit endeavored beyond their respective boundaries in search of adventure, food, goods, friends and sometimes enemies!

Have Water - Will Travel - The Maritime World.

Since the evolution of mankind, a pioneering spirit has prevailed to scale new heights and conquer new frontiers. Waters of the rivers, tributaries, seas, and the oceans proved no hindrance to this adventurous being - we call Man! Due to this natural trait, the word maritime embraced all that happens on the shores, on and in the water bodies that cover our earth.

Tracing the history of maritime existence would be akin to writing a thesis or a novel larger than any known documentation. From ‘prehistoric’ times to the 21st century, maritime life has dominated all nations - both at peace and in war! We can only skim the surface and still wonder in awe at the discoveries being made every day on the secrets of maritime ecology and techniques. The subject is so dense and vast that numerous institutions were established and each of them cover and research only a few maritime topics. The International Maritime Organization or IMO is one of the only legal body that covers nearly all that has to do with maritime terminology. The Internet is full of references on almost each and every subject that has anything to do with maritime or even near to it! Of course, the more active maritime adventures may not be for those who are unfortunately victims of “hydrophobia”!

Learning or Researching Maritime.

From the ordinary fisherman to the adventurous traveler to the tough Mariner, the word maritime means a life full of events. These people are truly amphibians as they spend nearly half their lives on or in the water. Each and every nation of the world provides learning bodies and institutions on all related topics for maritime education, whether it be fisheries, marine life, coastal development, the navy, oceanographic research, transportation (remember the great tycoon - Alexander S. Onassis?), etc. It is all there from the exploits of the first Man to the present day, from the first ‘boats’ to the most sophisticated ships, from the first ocean travelers to present day explorers - bringing to life the proverbial term “the final frontier” appear infinite and unreachable. Not only on our blue planet but also reaching out into outer space and galaxies of the universe for exploring life forms and prospects of rich marine culture. This is one topic that demands more than one lifetime to learn and experience all its richness!
