When I was a young kid, my favorite television shows were Spiderman and Gilligan’s Island. I would have the same dream night after night that I was trapped on Gilligan’s Island and Spidy was out to get me. I’d wake up tangled in the sheets every time. In the dream, it wasn’t sheets, but Spiderman’s web. As a child, that was compelling and gripping to me. Today I write on many subjects, mostly finance, investing, and the subject of writing in general. Each subject I write about is compelling and interesting to me.

Whatever it is you’re writing about, it must be more than interesting, it must be compelling. You can’t touch an audience if it doesn’t tug at your heart and mind first. Folks are attracted to passionate people. You must show that in your work.

People ask me where I get my ideas. I hear a gripping tale of a man riding his motorcycle when a gang runs him down in the streets and beats him to death. I’m a biker and this adds for a double whammy of a story. I’m passionate about getting ahead financially in life. Stories come from all directions. Pick the one that you can feel most about.

Personal experiences that shook you up inside are the best places to start writing if you’re new at the game. What shocked your world?

I love to play pool and I’m good at it, but I couldn’t write a movie like Poolhall Junkies if my life depended on it. Why not? I like pool and I like movies, but not enough to write with passion that can move me. I did write a movie about a gentleman biker who was ran down and killed by a gang, and his son goes after the gang and kills them. A biker revenge movie I can stick my teeth into. What can you stick your teeth into? A small interest is still only a small interest, but a big interest has a compounding effect, like a good investment. Don’t just write what you know, write what you know and have the most passion for. Without the passion, your work is just words and a mediocre story.
