Executive coaching is still a growing industry even though according to some research it has slowed down. Yet, what is still consistent since early 2000, is that women coaches are preferred to men.

Given that men hold over 90% of all the highest executive and corporate positions, their choice to help them improve their performance is not another man, but a woman. Research also suggests that women executives and women business owners also want executive coaches who are women. Overall women executive coaches are preferred almost 4 to 1.

So why the demand for women as executive coaches? The answer to this question I believe is probably that women build better relationships than men do. Today’s workforce and market place is much more about authentic relationships.

Having an authentic relationship is the basis for executive coaching. The executive coach acts as a guide to help the individual being coached to discover the answers that he or she has had within him or her the entire time. Women build better relationships than men because they have a different purpose. The purpose is more authentic in that women want to make sure that the relationship mutual and beneficial to both parties.

For example, years ago customer satisfaction was paramount. Today, customer satisfaction is worthless because with a click of a mouse, a satisfied client can be satisfied by one of your competitors. However, customer loyalty is everything.

Customer loyalty happens because the relationship is stronger and more authentic than the desire to move the mouse. Also, the relationship is on two levels. The first level is the relationship between the loyal customer and the contact person within the business. On the second level, the relationship is between the loyal customer and the overall business. Women understand this multi-dimensional approach to these relationships.

This understanding requires leaving the ego at the door. Most women are able to step aside from their egos. Between working with their ego states and having the inherent capacity to build authentic relationships, why should it be a surprise that your executive coach is a woman?
